Nellie Mae Barham

March 28, 1926 — February 19, 2015

Ms. Barham was born in Rex, Georgia in 1926. Ms. Barham was raised by her grandparents, Rev. Gilbert Nathaniel and Hattie M. Bryant. After the death of her grandparents, Ms. Barham and her family moved to Toledo, Ohio seeking better employment opportunities. She worked at Bennys Cafeteria and Phillips Grill upon arrival, but soon found career employment at St. Vincent Hospital. After five years as a Nurses Aide at St. Vincent, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan, to be closer to her spouses employment at Ford Motor Company. After one year in Detroit, Ms. Barham and her children moved back to Toledo where she continued her previous employment. After 30 plus years at St. Vincent Hospital, first as a Nurses Aide and later as a Unit Clerk, she retired in 1989. Ms. Barham raised three children, Betty, Gregory and Karen. She was a loving, caring mother and surrogate mother to many of her childrens friends. Ms. Barham was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie May (Bryant) and Dorsey Walker; spouse, Woodrow Barham; son, Gregory Barham; and longtime partner, Baxter Jack Long. She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Betty Valentine and Karen Everage; grandchildren, Kory Barham, André Parr and Angela Brown; great-grandchildren, Caden Hatfield-Barham, Leo Finnegan- Parr, Antoinette, DAngelo, and Cherelle Brown; several great-great grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 5-7:00pm at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) where services will be held Thursday at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Online condolences may be shared at walkerfuneralhomes.com.
