Nancy Jean Herring, 90, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on August 10, 2022. She was born on December 20, 1931 to Wilfred and Freda (Willems) Ufer where she was raised on a farm in Maumee, Ohio.
Nancy met her beloved husband, Wilfred “Bill” Herring, Jr., at the young age of 11. Their relationship bloomed from there and the two got married at the ages of 19 and 21 where they were happily married for 72 years. She graduated from Maumee High School and proceeded to work as a manager at AT&T before becoming a full-time homemaker. In 1981, Nancy and her daughter, Elise, bought a women’s boutique called The Florence Shop where they owned and operated the business for 8 years. She loved doing all the office work, especially anything that involved accounting or bookkeeping. She excelled at knitting, creating the most beautiful and exquisite items, and will dearly be remembered for the loveliest sweaters that she would make for her family.
Nancy and her husband lived in Florida for 27 years before returning to Toledo 12 years ago. Nancy had many hobbies including researching her family lineage, hunting, fishing, playing slot machines, as well as traveling all over the world with her husband. She enjoyed gardening as well as gathering dandelions to make dandelion wine. She was a member of Catawba Island Club, the Toledo Club, and the Stuart Corinthian Yacht Club for years and was quite the hostess who frequently entertained guests at her home. She found a simple joy in collecting antique cut glass. She loved the finer things in life, good chocolates, good food, good spirits, and good friends.
Nancy was known for being the steady support of her husband in all that he did. They went everywhere together and could always be found enjoying their afternoon cocktail. She was an extremely proud grandmother and great grandmother who was fortunate to spend an abundance of quality time with her grandchildren in recent years. She will be missed dearly by all of her family and will always hold a special place in their hearts.
Nancy is survived by her children, Wilfred “Bill” E. (Susan) Herring, III, Elise (Paul) Devers; grandchildren, Brooke (Roget) Aouad, Brandi (Chris) Russow, Paige (Justin) Musselman, Wilfred “Will” E. Herring, IV, Grace Herring, Robert Herring; nine great-grandchildren; many other extending family members; and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Shirley Wittenmeyer and Joann Veler, and the love of her life, Wilfred “Bill” Herring, Jr.
