Michael Joseph Welcheck

Michael Joseph Welcheck, age 61, died in his sleep in the early morning of March 5, 2026, at his home at Luther Crest Apartments in Toledo.

Michael had a challenging life, enduring muscular dystrophy for nearly 50 years. He was always cheerful and friendly, and everyone around him was always laughing. He tried to make others feel welcome in spite of his hardships. He loved working on the computer, and even though he could not use his hands, he was able to operate the computer using the Eye Gaze method. Michael was very active in the gym and was an inspiration to many. He was determined to go on and never gave up or surrendered to his disease.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. and Margaret A. Welcheck, and his siblings, Barbara, James, and Jeffrey. Surviving are his siblings: Margaret M. Martin (Charles), Edward C. Welcheck, and Veronica E. Welcheck.

Michael was a graduate of Rogers High School. Mike once said, "Since I'm in a wheelchair and my speech is slowed, people automatically think I'm mentally deficient. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the year 2000, I graduated from Owens Community College with an associate's degree in Computer Technical Illustration (CTI). When I graduated, it was with honors, and I was also a member of two honor societies."

We thank all of his caregivers and nursing staff for their patience and support over many years.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
