Michael Edward Nortz, 80, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. He was born on September 16, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio to his late parents, Benjamin and Margaret Nortz, where he grew up alongside his two brothers and one sister. He attended Gesu Catholic School in his youth before graduating from Saint Francis de Sales High School in 1960. He continued his education at The University of Toledo College of Business. Mike met the love of his life, Sondra Nortz, in 1970 when her request for a golf lesson led to a successful first date. The pair married in 1972 and together raised their three sons. They celebrated 50 years of loving marriage this past year. During his career he was a credit and finance manager for AP Parts and Prestolite Electric.
Mike was a faithful parishioner at Christ the King Catholic Church. He was not only true to his faith, but also to his weekly golf outings where he enjoyed time spent with many of his closest friends. He was a dedicated sports fan who could be found at Friday night basketball games, tailgating at The Glass Bowl with his friends, or rooting on the Mud Hens with his family. He found joy in music and was an avid patron of the arts. He and Soni loved summer concerts at the Toledo Zoo.
Mike was devoted to his family. He always made time for his childrens’ interests, as a passionate coach for his sons’ basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. He used coaching to set a high bar for integrity, instill the value of humility within his sons, and to engage in spirited debate with referees. Mike lived for his sons and yet was a mentor to many outside of his family, impacting people with his selflessness and generosity. Those values guided his service as a long-time employee for Meals on Wheels. Those who knew him remember him for his sense of humor and his knack for bringing levity to every situation. His wisdom was humble, his advice trusted, and his support steadfast.
His love and admiration for his wife was known to all. She will cherish their morning walks and nights on the patio, vacations with friends, and adventures out west with their grandkids. Mike was so dearly loved, and above all else his presence will be missed the most. In the end, Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, inspiring father, playful grandfather, and loyal friend to all those he met.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Sondra Nortz; sons, Jason (Alli), Timothy (Desiree), Kevin Nortz; grandchildren, Cierra, Crosby, and Elliot Nortz; sister Ann Marie (Dave) Satterthwaite; niece, Elizabeth Satterthwaite; sister-in-law Dorothy Nortz; niece, Kristen Nortz. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Jim Nortz; nephew, Sean Satterthwaite; niece, Sara Satterthwaite; father in-law and mother in-law, Merritt and Mary Ellen Sommers.
