Michael G. “Mike” Hertzfeld of Waterville, Ohio, passed away in Toledo on Friday, January 26, 2024. Michael was born on July 9, 1944, in Maumee, Ohio, and graduated from Maumee High School in 1962. He obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Toledo before beginning his career in banking. After several years, boredom soon led him to apply to the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department which then bloomed into a 25 year-long career. He attained the rank of Battalion Chief and was a very active officer in the union. He was an incredibly hardworking man and during his tenure as Chief, worked as a commercial accountant on the side and was a sailboat captain in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
After retiring, Mike found great joy in traveling the world. He was intentional about staying active and did so by running by playing the sports he loved, especially tennis and golf. He had a love for animals, especially dogs, and kept many pets throughout the years. He was very proud of his children and admired everything about his grandchildren. He was a strong, loving man who had a strong sense of justice deep within him. He always strove to defend what was right, lived for the underdog in the story, and simply always tried to do the right thing. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, whose memory will be cherished and incredibly missed by all who knew him.
Mike is survived by his two sons, James (Esther) Hertzfeld, Eric (Crystal) Hertzfeld; grandchildren, Alexander, Jacob, Rachel, and Vivienne Hertzfeld; brothers, Robert (Mary) Hertzfeld, John (Bridget) Schohl. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristin Hertzfeld who passed in 1990; father, James, died in action in WWII just after Mike’s birth; mother, Georgette (Wittebort) Hertzfeld Schohl, who passed at age 100; and his brother, Thomas (Gloria) Hertzfeld.
