Michael Ray Eichhorn

Michael "Mike" Eichhorn, aged 75, passed peacefully from heart failure on July 7th, surrounded by his children.

Mike was born in Durand, Michigan to John and Leona Eichhorn. He was the second of two children.

He graduated from Durand High School and began his career as a Millwright in General Motors Truck and Bus Metal Fab plant for 30 years. During that time, he graduated from Baker College. After retiring from General Motors, he continued to work as a Millwright at Ford's Rouge plant and then Severstal Steel before retiring.

Michael married his wife of almost 50 years, Maria, in 1974. They built a home in Lennon, Michigan where they raised 4 children. They were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church, where they remained parishioners until moving from the area in 2005. They were also members of St. Francis Prayer Center in Flint, MI, St. Mary Magdalen, Hazel Park, MI, and most recently, St. Martin de Porres, Toledo.

He volunteered to coach youth soccer, and led the St. Mary youth group. He was an avid reader who supported education, public libraries, and loved history and genealogy. He'll be remembered for his love of practical jokes and his longform storytelling.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lois Avant and wife, Maria. He is survived by his four children: Laura Wharry (Ryan), John, Joseph (Sarah) and Abbi; and seven grandchildren as well as extended family and friends.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home (5155 Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623). Funeral mass will be Monday at 11 am with visitation the hour before at St Martin De Porres, (1119 W Bancroft St, Toledo, OH 43606). A private internment will follow.
