Mere E. Girkins, age 93, passed away January 17, 2017 at The Grove at Oak Leaf Village. She was born July 30, 1923 in Toledo to the late Elmer and Norma (Kleine) Emfield. A 1941 graduate of Waite High School, she married Richard Girkins on October 5, 1946 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church and he preceded her in death on August 6, 1975. Mere was employed at Tiedkes as a cashier and later worked for a number of years as a teller at The Toledo Trust Co. Her primary vocation was serving as a loving and devoted mother and wife, supporting her husband in his operation of the family business, Girkins Electric. Mere was a 50-year member of Church Women United, including serving as president. She also was the treasurer of the Church Women United Thrift Shop and a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving as the church financial secretary. Mere was also a member of the YWCA Business and Professional Women, Beta Sigma Phi and Lotus Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Left to cherish her memory include her sons and their wives, David and Carol Girkins and Tom and Kirsten Girkins; and grandchildren, Ben and Katie Girkins. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd.) concluded with funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
