Melvin Bettinger, age 82, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born January 26, 1932, to Kenneth and Adeline Myer Bettinger in Toledo. Mel grew up in Sylvania and was a graduate of Burnham High School, was a Korean Army veteran, and was a proud alumnus at the University of Toledo. His career spanned 42 years at Libbey Glass as a distribution analyst. His friends from Libbey meant a lot to him and he enjoyed their time together golfing and meeting for lunch. Mel was very active at his church, St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, serving as an usher every weekend, and he cherished the friends he made there. Mel is survived by his wife, Bernice Giffin of 62 years, daughters, Karen Rosebrock, Beth Mike Bruegger, Brenda Clixby, and son, David Jami. His large family included 9 grandchildren, Tracy, Josh, Kristy, Matt, Adam, Tiffany, Jennifer, McKenzi and DeLaini, and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son, Jeffrey. The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the caring and compassionate staff at Wellsbrooke Home Health Care, especially Lisa, and to the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their excellent guidance and care. The family will receive family and friends, Monday, March 24, 2014, at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio, from 3 PM - 8 PM, with the rosary at 7:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at 10 AM at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Catholic Church, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, Ohio. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
