Matthew K. Ujvagi, age 49, passed away at home Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Matthew was born in Toledo January 9, 1975 to Charles and Diana Ujvagi. He was a performer from a young age, staging comedy skits for his family and showing an early proclivity for music. He graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School where he was known for his memorable performances in the school’s plays. He attended University of Toledo, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1997 and his Juris Doctor in 2000. Matthew worked for over 20 years at the City of Toledo where he was a valued friend and colleague.
Matthew and Melanie met in 2004 while they were both working for the city, and they married in 2017. They decorated their 20 years together with good food and good music, frequenting local restaurants and going to see their favorite musicians live. Matthew was a talented musician and singer himself, known for his booming voice, and was a member of several local bands. He had a brilliant and curious mind, and he loved to read history and watch documentaries. Proud of his own history as a Hungarian American, he enjoyed gathering with his family at home or the Hungarian Club of Toledo and cooking Hungarian food in the bogrács over an open fire. Matthew also shared a special kinship with his adoring nephew who knew him as Uncle Matty.
He is survived by his wife Melanie Campbell; parents Charles and Diana; brother Stephen, sister-in-law Shannon, niece Katie, and nephews Nolan and Spencer; mother-in-law Martha Campbell, sister-in-law Elizabeth Cruz, and nephew Oliver; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and countless friends. Matthew will be remembered for his passion and conviction, his big voice, and his big heart.
Visitation will be 3:00 to 7:00 pm Friday, April 5 and 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave, Toledo, Ohio. A service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday at Walker Funeral Home. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Matthew’s memory to ActBlue, Toledo Area Humane Society, or National Alliance on Mental Illness.
