Matina Nicholas, age 92, of Plymouth, MI, and formally of Sylvania, OH, passed away Tuesday, January 29th, 2019. She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful wife and mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and devout Greek Orthodox Christian. Matina loved her family and church. She enjoyed spending time with her dear friends by the pool at Clearwater Point, shopping, playing bingo, going to the casino and Wheel of Fortune. She loved to laugh and brightened the day of whomever she met. She was a former member of Philoptochos and Daughters of Penelope in the Greek community. Matina was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Nicholas; brothers, Louis Nakos, Peter Nakos, Harry Nakos (Marie Nakos); and brother-in-law Newell Kaufman. She is survived by her daughters, Elaine (Thomas) Foster and Bess (Stephen) Afendoulis; her beloved grandchildren, Nicholas, Daniel, Peter and Gregory; her sister, Irene Kaufman; nieces and nephews, Cary Kaufman, Melissa (John) Deku and Zack (April) Nakos; grandnieces, Alexandra and Amanda Deku; and grandnephew Theo Deku. Visitation will be Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 740 N. Superior Street, Toledo from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am. Trisagion prayers begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements through Walker Funeral Home, 419.841.2422.
