Maryann (Wasserman) Buckenmeyer, age 74, died on Monday, October 18, 2016. She was surrounded by the love of her family when she peacefully died at home in Monclova, of multi-organ failure, with the assistance of Hospice care. Maryann was born in Tiffin and graduated from St. Ursula Academy and later Mary Manse College. She taught two generations of children in her 28-year career at St. Agnes School. Affectionately known as “Mrs. B,” she taught fifth and sixth grade language arts. She loved the chance to teach at the same school where her mother was the school secretary and her aunt had been the principal. After her retirement, she had the opportunity to be more involved in the lives of her family, friends, and neighbors. She loved to visit her young granddaughters in Ann Arbor and delighted in reading to them and playing with them. She enjoyed baking for events at her parish, Saint John XXIII. She was a voracious reader, especially of romance novels. She loved cooking, trying out new recipes, and became an ardent fan of the Food Network. She enjoyed vacations to her favorite places: the warm beaches of Sanibel Island, Florida, and Frankenmuth, Michigan, a connection to her German roots. Kelly’s Island also held a special place in her heart, as it had so many ties to family memories. She appreciated the simple pleasures of life: sitting out on the deck on her Waterside neighborhood home, watching the leaves change color in autumn, cheering during Michigan football games, and sipping an extra-dry gin martini with extra olives. Maryann’s personality was dynamic, and throughout her life people were drawn to her generosity, kindness, and quick sense of humor. She faced countless medical issues, beginning ten years before she died. Time after time, she defied the odds, surviving the most complicated medical emergencies. Her will to live was incredibly strong, and she fought hard until the end, all the while keeping a positive attitude and a sense of humor. She very much wanted to have more time. Maryann is preceded in death by her parents, Martha (Krupp) and Ray Wasserman, her sister Janie Bockerman, and her beloved aunt, Sr. Mary Rose Krupp. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Don Buckenmeyer, her brothers Mike and Tom Wasserman, her sister Ruth (Rick) Swierczek, her children, Jennifer and Jonathan Jenks, her stepson, Marty (Hannelore) Buckenmeyer, and her grandchildren, Madeline and Amelia Jenks and Lily and Danielle Buckenmeyer. The visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23, at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home at 501 Conant St. in Maumee from 3-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will be a funeral mass on Monday, October 24, at Saint John XXIII, at 24250 Dixie Hwy. in Perrysburg at 11 a.m., with a luncheon at the church to follow. A teacher to the very end, she donated her body to the University of Toledo Medical College, so others could continue to learn from her. The family would like to offer special thanks to the physicians and staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, for their caring and compassionate treatment, especially during the past four months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to be made to the Ursuline Center in Toledo, Saint John XXIII parish, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
