Our beautiful mother joined our father in Heaven in the early hours of Memorial Day. Mom was born on October 13, 1928 to Frank and Blanche Keating. She attended St. Anne’s and Notre Dame Academy. Mom married the love of her life, Walter Stengle, on October 22, 1949. They were blessed with six children, who adored them both. Our large, close-knit family celebrated living, loving, joy, heartbreak, and all that life entails. Her family was her life. Known for her soft voice, kindness, warm smile, and gentleness toward others, our home was a favorite hangout for the neighborhood kids. She strongly believed that all people, regardless of religion, ethnicity, social class, or gender identity are created equal…..a beautiful gift to her children, and everyone around her. Thank you mom for delicious Sunday dinners, summers at the lake, teaching us that two wrongs don’t make a right, and how to make a perfect standing rib roast. Mom was a long time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, and a current member of Saint Joseph’s Maumee. She attended Mass almost every day, and loved spending quiet hours in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Joe’s, praying for the world. She valued every single life, and in 1971, along with the late Dr. John Hillabrand, his nurse Esther Applegate, and Holocaust survivor Lore Mair, started Heartbeat of Toledo. Today it is an international organization with over 2,500 affiliate locations in 50 countries, helping thousands of young women. Preceding mom to heaven was her loving husband, Walter Stengle, Her parents Frank and Blanche Keating, Late siblings Lieutenant Commander Andrew J. Keating (Margie), Virginia Hertzfeld (Marty), and Frank Keating Jr. (Miriam), and her precious, beloved grandchildren Matt Stengle and Jessica Stengle Duncan. She leaves behind her adoring children Christine Leighton, Cynthia Olsen (Rob), Thomas Stengle (Shari), Mark Stengle (Cindy), Michael Stengle (Kathy), and Kevin Stengle (Eilena), grandchildren Amy Stephenson, Sean Stephenson (Elle), Crownsville, MD, David Olsen, Roanoke, VA, Sacha Katalan (Roy), Tel Aviv, Israel, Phillip Stark, Madrid, Spain, Shalom Stark (Devra), Pardes Chana, Israel, Sarah Carter, Crystal Kostic (Jeff), Pisa, Italy, Lauren Guhl, (Jon), Kyle Stengle (Jackie), Chicago, IL, Jamie Leighton, Kaylan Phillips (Joe), Brandon Stengle, David Leighton, Columbus, OH, Casey Stengle (Talor), and twenty five great grandchildren whom she adored. A Mass to celebrate Mary’s life will be this Friday, June 1st at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 104 W. Broadway Street, Maumee, OH. Please join us for a luncheon immediately following in the church. In lieu of flowers, mom requested you do something kind for someone today, and to remember Hospice of NW Ohio. A very special thank you to mom’s two amazing Hospice nurses Trixie and Stephanie. With their help, and mom’s family, she was able to stay home, watching the birds, and the river that she loved so much. Arrangements by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee.
