Mary Lopez Serna, age 91, of Sylvania, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, in her home on a sunny afternoon surrounded by her family. Born in Hunter, Texas on November 11, 1932, to Juventino and Juanita Fonseca Lopez, Mary helped start the family restaurant, El Charro, back in 1953 on the 700 block of Summit Street in downtown Toledo. That’s where she learned to cook her delicious Mexican food.
Mary was a devout Catholic and member of The Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral for over 60 years. She loved to travel, go to casinos, and spend time with her family. Mary was the caring woman that everyone turned to when they needed help. She helped raise her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, neighbors, and children of many others. She had the trust of everyone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo Serna; parents; siblings: baby sister, Virginia Lopez, Celestino Lopez, Jesse F. Lopez, Juventino Lopez, Jr., Erlinda Ramos, Eloisa Alvarado; and many nieces and nephews. Surviving are her children, Domingo “Sonny” Serna, Jr., Verna (Dale) Grocki, of Lake Seneca, Gina Lee Serna; grandchildren, Austin James Serna, Lucia Maria Serna; brother, John Lopez; sisters, Millie Cook, Magarita (Larry) Barrett; sister-in-law, Obdulia (Phil) Irwin; brothers-in-law, Bill (Janice) Serna, Robert (Sally Harms) Serna, Moises (Karen) Serna, David (Deb) Serna; and countless other extended family members and friends.
