Mary Elizabeth Purdy, 88 of Perrysburg, OH passed away Thursday, December 7, 2023 with her family at her side. She was born February 3, 1935 to John and May (Krenk) Petrucha in Toledo, OH. Having grandparents from Czechosloviakia and parents involved in the Czech Community was something Mary was very proud of. In fact, Mary spoke only Czechosloviakian and did not learn to speak English until she was 5 years old and preparing to attend school.
During her school age years, Mary was very active in the Girl Scouts with her sister and their mother as a leader. She graduated from Whitmer High School in 1953, and a few years later met her soul mate while out square dancing with friends. Mary and Kenneth Purdy were married on September 24, 1960. They spent many happy years raising their family, “antiquing”, and enjoying a life together until his passing in 1992.
While her daughters were young, she served on the PTA, Mother’s Club and as a Girl Scout troop leader. She later spent many years working as a daycare teacher at Maria Childcare; a job she loved. After retirement Mary was able to spend more time having fun with her family and doting on her grandchildren. Mary was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and a zealous member of the Red Hat Society. Mary considered herself the “Mayor of Heartland” where she spent her days meeting, greeting, and beading with other residents at the place she called home for the last 12 years. Above all, Mary will be remembered as the ideal image of a grandmother who adored her family.
Mary is survived by her loving daughters Diane (Jeremy) Parsons and Catherine Purdy; grandchildren Thomas (Morgan) Sumner, Kyle (Judith) Sumner, Jared Parsons, Alexis and Nicholas Monteon; as well as great-grandchildren Bowen, Violet, and Adeline Sumner. She is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Purdy; parents John and May Petrucha; and sister Ginny Petrucha.
Family and friends will be received Wednesday, December 13, 2023 from 11 AM to 1 PM and memorial service at 1 PM at Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant St. Maumee. A luncheon will follow at Monclova Community Center. Contributions in Mary’s memory can be made to (American Heart Association, Kidney Foundation of NW Ohio, or Victory Center of Toledo).
