Mary J. Overfield, age 100, formerly of Toledo, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023, at Mission Point Care Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where she was a resident. Born June 21, 1923, in Rollin, Michigan to the late George and Mary (Peckhart) Groves, she attended Scott High School in Toledo. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, John Overfield, in 1988.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at both Spencer Manor and Lake Park for many years. In her free time, Mary enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching soap operas. She also loved the outdoors including working in her yard, camping and watching birds. Mary had a unique personality, shaped by being raised during the Great Depression. She was an excellent storyteller and learned to be a strong presence for her family and friends. She also had a terrific sense of humor and will be lovingly remembered for her selfless, giving nature and for her amazing chocolate chip cookies and homemade pies. Mary was a longtime member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Toledo.
Private interment will take place at Toledo Memorial Park.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Barbara Swy and Daniel (Diana) Overfield; 9 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren. Mary was also preceded in death by siblings, Orville, Homer, Violet, Herman, Zella and Ellen.
