Mary Ann Niedzielski

Mary Ann (Seward) Niedzielski, age 91, passed away peacefully on June 15th. She was born on July 31, 1933, in Bay City, Michigan, the youngest child of Merton and Stella Seward. She was predeceased by Robert, her husband of 63 years, her brothers Merton Jr., James and Robert, and her daughter-in-law Carol (John).

Mary Ann was a graduate of Aquinas College (Grand Rapids, MI) and received a Master of Arts in English from The University of Michigan. She returned to Aquinas College and joined the English Department in 1956 as an instructor. She met her future husband at Aquinas and they married in 1958.

Mary Ann continued to teach English on a part-time basis at The University of Illinois where she supported Robert as he pursued his PhD in Chemistry. She settled in Toledo in 1965 when Robert became an assistant professor at The University of Toledo. Mary Ann later worked in a variety of roles at St. Pius X Parish, first as a volunteer and then as a member of the pastoral team, assisting the parish community.

Mary Ann was an avid genealogist and enjoyed reading, antiquing, photography, travelling and playing tennis. She supported her family in many ways and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Robert Jr. (Karen), John, Andrew (Peggy) and Michael; her grandchildren, Kathryn (Samuel), Steven (Charlotte), Patrick, Alissa and Benjamin; and her great-grandchildren, Neil, Robin and Arthur. She is also survived by her brother Peter and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will take place on Friday, June 27th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo (419-841-2422). A Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, June 28th at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Parish, 3011 Carskaddon Ave., Toledo, OH 43606. Inurnment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to St. Pius X Parish or the Aquinas College Annual Scholarship Fund (aquinas.edu).
