Mary M. (Berning) Micka, 87, died Monday, April 27, 2020, at Parkcliffe Memory Care Community in Toledo, with her husband by her side, finding peace after years of living with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born July 31, 1932, to Leo and Anna Berning, and grew up in Toledo. She graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950 and met Stanley Micka at Pearson Park’s outdoor skating rink soon after. Dates at the Valentine Theatre and Toledo Sports Arena led to their marriage four years later at Holy Rosary Church in 1954. They raised four children in Maumee, where Mary also worked for Toledo Trust, now Key Bank. For decades, the family visited Michigan’s Hemlock Lake in the summer, well into the teenage years of her oldest grandchildren. She enjoyed bowling, crafts, puzzles and card games, and her sweet tooth could never be satisfied. Her grandchildren treasured the handmade pajamas and trademark lunches she made and the many walks to Penguin Palace, as well as her constant presence at every sporting event, musical concert or Grandparents’ Day. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard (Vivian) Berning. She is survived by her husband; sister Evelyn (Benjamin, deceased) Preest; children Debi (Mike) DeBrosse, Denny Micka, Diann (Bill) Harrison and Donna (John) Cheung; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and one grouchy orange tabby. She will be greatly missed by all. A memorial service will take place in the summer, when the family can gather together. The family would also like to thank the Parkcliffe community, especially the staff at House 7 South, for caring for Mary for so many years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, at bit.ly/marymicka or by calling (800) 272-3900; or to the Capital Improvement Fund at St. Joseph Catholic Parish Maumee, 104 W. Broadway St., by calling (419) 893-4848.
