Mary A. Mayer

Mary A. (Walker) Mayer, age 79, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at St Anne’s Hospital while listening to Chopin and surrounded by her family. Mary was born January 1, 1937 in Waterloo, Iowa to Elden E. Walker and Edythe (Fenner) Walker. She moved several times during her childhood, finally settling in Mansfield, Ohio. She graduated in 1954 from Mansfield Senior HS. She was employed in Martin Steel Products as a switchboard operator, where she met her husband Jack. They were married Sept. 7, 1957 and celebrated 58 years together this past fall. She “retired” after marriage to become a stay at home. While living in Mansfield she was involved in several Catholic organizations, was Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and was a Girl Scout Leader. Mary moved to Toledo in 1972. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting and travel. By far her favorite thing was spending time with her children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as visiting her large extended family. She also enjoyed visiting and traveling with her sister Barbara in California She is survived by husband, John (Jack), daughter Marcia (Dick) Willinger-Kaverman, grandchildren Melissa, (Brock) Batteline, Alison Maples, Jessica Willinger, Collin (Lydia) Mayer, Samantha Willinger, martin (Jessica) Mayer, Nikki Mayer and great-grandchildren Brody and Mia Batteline, sister Sarah (Sally), Barbara (Bobbi), sisters-in-law Julia and JoAnne and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thursday, March 31, 2016 from 10:00 am until 12:30 pm in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43623 followed by procession to Corpus Christi University Parish, 2955 Dorr Street, Toledo, Ohio 43607 for funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. Following Mass, the family invites friends of Mary and her son Mike Mayer for fellowship and reminiscing from 2 - 7 pm at the Ward Pavilion, Wildwood Preserve Metropark, 5100 W. Central Avenue, Toledo Ohio 43615. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mary’s name to the Mary and Jack Mayer Community School (a Christian school in Mazabuka, Zambia, Africa that was co-founded by their son Mike) in care of Marcia Willinger-Kaverman, 2830 Evergreen Road, Toledo, OH 43606.
