Mary Campane Madigan

Mary Campane Madigan, 91, died December 3, 2010 in the Memory Care Unit at the Kingston Residence in Sylvania, OH from complications associated with Alzheimers Disease. Mary was born November 05, 1919 to Nicola and Maria Campana in Troy, NY. She was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy and attended Albany Business School before working as an Administrative Secretary and Voucher Auditor at the Watervliet Arsenal and Veterans Administration Regional Office in Albany. Between 1952 and 1956, Mary served a civilian overseas tour in Japan as Administrative Assistant to the Commanding Officer, U.S. Army Hospital and the 406th Medical General Laboratory in Tokyo. Upon returning to the U.S., Mary was Administrative Assistant in the Office of the Surgeon General, Department of the U.S. Army for four years in Washington D.C. In 1962, while Administrative Assistant to the Medical Director of D.C. General Hospital, Mary met her future husband, Dr. Howard S. Madigan. They married in 1963, and the following year moved to Toledo, Ohio where he was appointed the first Director of Medical Education at St. Vincent Medical Center. Mary was extensively involved in volunteer activities, particularly at St. Vincent. She was President of the Auxiliary in 1969-70 when the auxiliary was instrumental in providing a mobile health unit for the Grey Nuns hospital mission in Kabba, Nigeria. She and Dr. Madigan spent a month in Kabba in 1969 when he was interim surgeon at the hospital. During her twenty-five years as a volunteer at St. Vincent, Mary was a member and chairman of numerous Auxiliary committees, and in 1995 received the St. Vincent Outstanding Volunteer Service Award. She was a Board member and volunteer for Mobile Meals of Toledo, Board member, historian and parliamentarian for The Academy of Medicine Alliance and also served on the boards of the Toledo Symphony League and the Toledo Opera Guild. Mary and Howard enjoyed traveling and their trips included Africa, Australia/New Zealand, European countries, and South America. She is survived by Howard, her husband of 47 years; nephews, Phillip Leslie and Nicholas Bobbi Bocketti; nieces, Marie Leo Carroll, Jude Bocketti, and several grand-nieces and nephews. Funeral services and burial will take place in Troy, NY on December 11, 2010. Local arrangements by the Walker Funeral Home, 419.841.2422.
