Mary Lou Gilbert

Mary Lou Gilbert, age 83, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Toledo Hospital. The daughter of Alice Susan (McCarter) and Herman Harget, she was born Sept. 6, 1937 in Toledo. She was a 1955 graduate of Whitmer High School. She received her teaching degree from Ohio University and later earned her Masters and Specialist degrees in education from the University of Toledo. Mary Lou taught for over 40 years at Monac, McGregor, Hiawatha, Jackman and Meadowvale retiring in 1997. She was a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar. On February 10, 1962 she married William “Bill” Gilbert. After retirement, she loved to travel with Bill and attend the grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed the McCarter family reunions in Gatlinburg. Mary Lou’s heart was in the Great Smoky Mountains. She is survived by her husband, Bill; sons, Greg (Shelly) Gilbert. Doug (Lisa) Gilbert; grandchildren, Eric, Lucas (Hannah Mehling), Erin, Morgan, Adam; great granddaughter, Tinsleigh; sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Halter, Dorothy (Manuel) Yakumithis; brother, Charles Harget and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Friends may visit the family on Saturday, July 31, 2021 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home 5155 Sylvania Ave. (west of Corey Rd) where a service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Swaddlers at Hampton Park Christian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
