Mary Elizabeth Lichtenwald

June 30, 1937 — June 14, 2025

Mary E. Lichtenwald, 87, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025. Born on June 30, 1937, in Toledo to George Edward and Ethel Mae (Hanthorn) Counts.

A graduate of Libby High School, Class of 1955, Mary continued her education at Stautzenberger College from 1955 to 1956. She advanced her professional journey with other companies then started with Radco Industries in 1993 and retired in 1997. Retirement, however, was just the beginning of a new chapter—Mary remained active as a self-employed professional in office services and contributed her talents to Sobb/Roberts Tax Accountants and Toledo Hospital Emergency Physicians of Northwest Ohio. She was also a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Point Place.

Mary was a life member of the Point Place River View Yacht Club and served as past president of the Point Place Business Association. She also held the role of financial secretary at the Friendship Park Community Center. Her passion for order and excellence extended into her hobbies—she was a master gardener, a title bestowed by the Toledo Botanical Society, and had a keen interest in ancestry, genetics, and forensic accounting.

Known for her love of Christmas, Mary will be remembered as opinionated, proper, and deeply committed to procedure and protocol. She was goal-focused and always carried herself with grace and determination. She cherished time spent gardening, shopping, enjoying the company of her close-knit group of friends “the girls,” and driving her beloved Chrysler cars.

Mary had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her black cats, “Pyewacket”, and her cherished West Highland White Terriers, “Muffy” and later “Jasper”.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lichtenwald, and her sister, Barbara Canterras. She is survived by her partner of 25 years, Kent LaFontaine; her brother, George Edward Counts; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Burial will be held privately at Riverside Cemetery, Maumee, OH. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or a charity of the Donor’s choice. Arrangements by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee, OH. Condolences can be shared at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
