Mary R. Knurek, 89, of Genoa, Ohio died Sunday, May 24, 2009 in the Edward & Marion Knight Hospice Center, Perrysburg, OH. Mary was born on May 25, 1919 in Clay Center, OH, to Michael and Mary Svetlak Verkin. On February 27, 1943 Mary married John C. Knurek in Genoa, OH. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa, where she was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Grotto Committee. Mary was also a member of the Rosary Altar Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Toledo, OH. Mary was a waitress and cook at the Ritz Supper Club for many years. She then began work at St. Charles Mercy Hospital as a seamstress, where she retired from in 1982. Mary loved to polka dance, sew, crochet cook, spend time in the garden, and travel with her husband. Mary is survived by her husband of 66 years, John, sons, John Medy Knurek of Crescent Hill, IL, and Michael Kathy Knurek of Toledo, daughter, Helen DeCant of Oregon, OH, grandchildren, Annemarie, Tim, Emily and Steve Knurek, Janette Mike OConnor, and Joseph DeCant, great grandchildren, Katheryn Hendricks, Michael OConnor Jr., and Sean OConnor, sisters, Ann Jozwiak, Mildred Jim Evans, Magdaline Johnson, and Margaret Don Smith, brother, Andrew Marie Verkin. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Steven and Joseph Verkin, sister Helen Meng, and grandson, Benjamin Knurek. The family would like to thank all the great people at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care and support. Funeral services for Mary will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Thursday, May 28, 2009 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Genoa, with burial to follow in the Clay Township Cemetery, Genoa. Visitation will be conducted in the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 from 2-8 PM, with a Rosary service beginning at 7 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions, in Marys name, be directed to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Grotto Fund, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or Donors Choice.
