Mary Angela (Keane) Hammerstein, the eldest of thirteen children born to the late Dr. Thomas and Betty (Smith) Keane, died at The Tecumseh Place under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.
Mary was born August 28, 1941, in Frederick, MD. She and her siblings were raised in Temperance, MI. She attended Notre Dame Academy in Toledo, OH and St. Mary Academy in Monroe, MI along with Mary Manse College in Toledo, OH and Siena Heights University in Adrian, MI.
On September 3, 1960, she married Martin W. (Bill) Hammerstein Jr. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Temperance, MI. Both the Keane and Hammerstein families were charter members of Mt. Carmel Church.
Mary was a member of Elks Lodge 53 in Toledo, OH; Adrian Eagles Aerie 2371 Auxiliary; Moose Lodge 1034 Auxiliary, Refrigeration Service Engineers Society, American Legion Auxiliary Post 97, and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Mary retired from Tecumseh Compressor Company on April 30, 2007, after 40 years of service. She had also been employed by the Adrian Board of Education and Adrian College.
Mary is survived by four daughters Angela (Bob) Verner of Adrian, Julie Forney of Show Low, AZ, Sally (Niek) van het Kaar of Lexington, KY, and Kim (Rex) Martin of Adrian. Grandchildren, Justin (Jamie) Verner, Ashley (Shaun) O’Brien, Westly (Danelle) Verner and Logan (Jamie)Verner, Jennifer (Paul) Long, Michael (Trish) Forney, and Jacob Forney, Chrystal (Jon) Ables, Ryan (Marissa) Martin, and Dylan (Korinna) Martin and twenty-one great grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Kathleen Hiller, Peggy Johnson, and Rose (Jeff) Shaffer, two brothers Pat (Peggy) Keane, John Keane and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents Mary was preceded in death by her husband Bill Hammerstein, Jr, two grandsons, William Forney, and Travis Martin, five brothers Tom, Mike, Joe, Marty, and Vince Keane, and two sisters Barb Lane and Teri Doty Keane and son-in-law Ralph Forney.
A memorial mass will be offered at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Campus by Father Michael Newman at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 21st, 2024. Visitation for family and friends will be at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will be served at the church activities center after mass.
Mary chose to be cremated. Interment of the cremains will be at Toledo Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. There will be a short committal service at the Cemetery for those who wish to attend.
