Mary Ann Cooper

March 12, 1942 — October 30, 2016

Mary Ann Cooper died peacefully at home in the company of her family early in the afternoon on Sunday, October 30, 2016. She was born in Toledo on March 12, 1942, to Doris K. and Marvin E. Mohr, late of Toledo. Mary Ann was also predeceased by her older brother, David M. Mohr of Tampa, Florida. Mary Ann grew up in west Toledo and attended Longfellow Elementary School. She graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1960, where she was Homecoming Queen. She went to Ohio University and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy. Mary Ann met Cary Cooper at Ohio University and they married after graduation and moved to the Washington D.C. area where Mary Ann worked as a Speech and Hearing Therapist in the Anne Arundel County, Maryland Public Schools. When Mary Ann and Cary moved to Toledo she worked for the Lucas County Board of Education as a Speech and Hearing Therapist in several of the Toledo Public Schools. Mary Ann and Cary have three children: Matt Cooper (Lana) and Rod Cooper (Lauri), of Ottawa Hills, and Jenny Cooper (Mike Dawson) of Somerville, Massachusetts. They also have five grandchildren: Liam, Stella, Zoe, Alex, and Charlie. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family. Mary Ann engaged in many student activities at DeVilbiss and Ohio University, making several lifelong friendships. She later continued a busy life with her family and friends. She enjoyed all kinds of card games, word games, and puzzles and particularly enjoyed the competition of playing duplicate bridge (eliminating the luck of the deal), becoming a Life Master in record time. Mary Ann loved music – she played the piano, the guitar and enjoyed singing (particularly harmonizing), playing in a bluegrass band for many years with Cary. She was an avid reader and encouraged her children and grandchildren to read and to be life-long learners. The family will receive friends at the Maison Dardenne Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio 43537 from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Thursday; and there will be a memorial service at the Funeral Home on Friday at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers the family requests that friends consider a donation to the Toledo-Lucas County Library Legacy Foundation or to a charity selected by the donor.
