Martha Carroll

Dr. Martha E. Carroll age 72 of Toledo passed away Tuesday, July 10 2012 at Heartland of Perrysburg. She was born May 3, 1940 in Mt. Airy North Carolina to Curtis and Mary Council Carroll. She attended Mt. Airy High School and received her Bachelors degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1962 and her Masters degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in special education in 1966. Marthas first teaching position was first grade in Greensboro Public Schools where she learned to eat fast as she was responsible for helping her students while sharing their lunch period. Next Martha taught junior high special education classes at Ft. Bragg North Carolina and then Eskimo children with special needs in Nome, Alaska. She completed her doctorate at George Peabody College For Teachers, Vanderbilt University, in 1973. Martha began her university teaching career in 1973 at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire where her paycheck bounced and the school closed. Martha came to the University of Toledo in 1974 where she taught until her retirement in 1999. Her tenure at UT included a seven year stint as Chair of the Department of Special Education Services in the College of Education and Allied Professions. Upon retirement from fulltime teaching at UT, Martha taught classes, mentored students and helped develop academic teaching programs in Special Education at Siena Heights University. As well as a teacher, Martha was a mentor who followed and encouraged the careers of her students after they graduated. During her 26 years at the University of Toledo, Martha received both the Outstanding Teacher 1992 and the Outstanding Advisor 1997 Awards. In 2008 she was awarded the University of North Carolina Greensboro School of Educations Distinguished Career Award. Martha believed in service to the community. For Girl Scout leaders, she developed curricula on the abilities of special needs children and conducted national workshops on the subject. She served on the Board of Maumee Valley Girl Scout Council, the Board of Goodwill Industries, the Childrens Rights Council and the Council for the Scottish Rite Reading Program. Preceded in death by her parents, she is survived by her sister, Sallie Park; niece Lark Tommy Elliott; nephews Mark Sue and Clark Linda Park; great nieces and nephews Lucy and Mac Elliott, Erica and Addison Park and John and Catherine Park. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Marthas life will be held Sunday, July 15 at 3 PM in First Unitarian Church formerly South Toledo Baptist Church 3205 Glendale Ave., Toledo of which she was a member. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Martha E.
