Mark A. Pownall Jr., age 93, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018. Mark was born in Toledo on January 11, 1925, the son of the late Mark Sr. and Dot Pownall. After graduating from Scott High School in 1943, Mark entered the Army Air Corp, became a skilled bomber pilot, and achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During his time while stationed in Sebring, FL, he met the love of his life, Martha and married in 1950. He remained in the Air Force Reserve for 9 years after WWII. Mark graduated from the University of Toledo with a double bachelors degree in mechanical/aeronautical engineering. He was a proud member of Phi Kappa Chi (PKA) and was the president of his junior class. Mark worked for Owens-Illinois/Libby Glass as a Facilities Engineer, retiring in 1985. After retirement, Mark enjoyed model railroading, as well as cheering on the Buckeyes and his alma mater Rockets. Mark is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha (McDonald) Pownall; children, Kevin I. Pownall (Candace L. Smith, MD) and Laura (Paul) Salfai; grandchildren, Amanda (Josh) Vopat, Becky (Bryce) Odegarden, Alex Salfai, and Kiel Anderson; 3 great-grandchildren. A celebration of Marks life will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2019 from 1:00-4:00pm at The Center for Alumni & Donor Engagement (in the Schmakel Lounge, 2nd floor), 4510 Dorr St., Toledo. Please make sure to arrive from the Richard Road entrance. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The University of Toledo Alumni Association.
