Marjory J. “Marmy” Hodges, 86, passed away November 30, 2012, in Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Born April 3, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio, Marmy was the daughter of Erwin J. and Kathleen (English) Ward. Marmy studied botany at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, before marrying Stephen B. (Steve) Hodges on July 6, 1946 in Toledo, Ohio. After their wedding, the couple settled in Huntington, New York. Marmy graduated from Hofstra University in 1948 with a degree in philosophy, then she and Steve relocated to Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1950. For the next 60 years, Marmy played a very active role in the Bradford community, serving and supporting a variety of local concerns while raising 5 children. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she led Sunday School classes for 27 years. She was a past president and member of the American Association of University Women, a volunteer for and director of the Community Outreach program, and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. Marmy and Steve were charter members and co-presidents of the Bradford Naturalist Club for 25 years. Strong believers in creating global awareness and friendships, Marmy and Steve were active in student foreign exchange programs including ICYE and AFS, hosting 32 exchange students in their home. Marmy also supported many other organizations in the community, including the Crook Farm, Bradford Landmark Society, the Tuna Valley Trails Association, The Bradford Ecumenical Home, Red Cross Meals on Wheels, and The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Marmy was recognized for her service to the community by The United Way, Bradford Little Theatre, Bradford YMCA, and Bradford Area Public Library. In 2010, Marmy and Steve moved to Pemberville, Ohio, and settled in the Otterbein Portage Valley community. Steve passed away on June 9, 2010. Marmy continued to pursue her interests in reading, gardening, crafts, and travel. She especially loved spending time with family and friends at her cottage on Lake Erie. Marmy is survived by her children, David Q. (Carmen) Hodges of Big Timber, MT, Matthew E. (Irene) Hodges of Arlington, MA, Martha W. (Rick) Nork of Northfield, MI, Kate H. (Dave) Burleigh of Socorro, NM, and Timothy S. (Cathy) Hodges of Auburntown, TN, fifteen grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Marmy was preceded in death by her husband Steve, her parents, one brother, and one sister. Friends will be received on Friday, December 14, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary Street, Perrysburg, OH, 43551 (Phone: 419-874-3133). A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, at Pemberville United Methodist Church, 205 Perry Street, Pemberville, OH, 43450, with Pastor Pete Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Meigs Cemetery. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Pemberville United Methodist Church, Bradford Area Public Library (67 West Washington Street, Bradford, PA 16701) or the Oak Harbor Public Library (127 West Main Street, Oak Harbor, OH 43449).
