His father and grandfather were physicians, authors and civic leaders and his mother was also highly educated and fluent in multiple languages. Marios finished high school with honors and subsequently received his Medical Degree from the University of Athens Medical School at the top of his class. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine in 1945, Marios served as a doctor in the front lines during the Greek civil war from 1946 - 1950. In 1954 he became board certified in General Surgery while earning a PhD. Degree. In 1955, Marios decided to seek a broader future by coming to the United States. He discovered the excitement of Orthopaedic Surgery at Cook County hospital and subsequently became the associate of Dr. Donald Miller, a prominent orthopaedic surgeon in Chicago. Shortly after his arrival in Chicago he met the love of his life, Tessie Doolas.; they were married in 1956 Marios moved his family to Toledo, Ohio in 1961 where after serving as chief resident at Maumee Valley Hospital now known as the University of Toledo Medical Center he joined Dr Howard Rosenblatt his longtime friend with whom he worked at Cook County hospital and Dr. Joseph Gosman in their growing orthopedic practice. Dr. James Gosman joined the group, Consulting Orthopedics, in 1975. Their practice expanded and was centered at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center Marios was an incredibly gifted physician and a skilled surgeon, well known and loved for his compassion, commitment, integrity, and concern for his patients. He gave tirelessly and unselfishly to those needing his medical expertise or emotional support. He was a superb role model for physicians in terms of his relationship with his patients and his willingness to extend himself to whatever lengths necessary to offer medical assistance. As a clinical scientist and orthopedic surgeon he exemplified the humanistic qualities in medicine so often bypassed in this age of high technology. His patients, peers, and colleagues were drawn into the warmth of his character. Marios contributed significantly to the education and training of medical professionals in Toledo over the span of his entire career. When the Medical College of Ohio was first formed in Toledo, Dr. Boucouras was among the initial group to be appointed Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedics. He volunteered his time and expertise as a surgeon and enjoyed teaching orthopedic residents, nurses, and medical students. He was voted one of their best professors He was involved in the field of designing polyaction knee orthoses for the F.M. Douglass Foundation at St. Vincent Medical Center. Several publications and the design of two knee orthoses were results from his work. Marios really loved being a doctor and a surgeon He genuinely enjoyed people and cared about them. .He was highly respected by all those working with him, and deeply loved by his many patients for being the consummate physician. Marios was a member of numerous civic and professional organizations, including the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County, American Medical Association and the Ohio State Medical Association, Ohio Orthopedic Society, Toledo Club, Sylvania Country Club, Club Pelican Bay Naples, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, St. Katherines Greek Orthodox Church Naples, Toledo Museum of Art, and the Philharmonic Center for the Arts Naples. Marios personal life was centered on his family and friends. He fiercely loved his family and would do anything for them. He set a fine example for them and supported them in all their endeavors. He was a talented guitarist who loved music immensely and was extremely proud when his daughter Ann performed as piano soloist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra. After his retirement in 1986 he enjoyed traveling with his wife Tessie, reading, biking several miles a day in fact joined a biking group in Florida, playing chess, cheering for his favorite NBA teams, and spending time with family and friends in the Boucouras home in Greece. Swimming was also an important part of his life since childhood Marios traveled with the Greek swimming team to the 1936 Berlin Olympics so it was inevitable that after his retirement Marios and Tessie spent winters in their condominium in Naples, Florida where the entire family often visited. Marios and Tessie also greatly enjoyed celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas in their Toledo home with the entire family. Cherished traditions and great fun were the hallmark of these special times in the Boucouras household. In his final days, Marios was surrounded by family members who loved him dearly. He was the cherished husband of Tessie, his wife of 54 years, and proud and loving father to his children Dean Boucouras of Powell, Ohio and Ann Dronen of Wilmette, Illinois as well as a caring father-in-law to Karen Boucouras and Keith Dronen. He was a tender and adoring grandfather to his precious grandchildren, Nicholas, Gina, Jason, Christopher, and Anastasia. Marios also had a special close relationship with Tessies brother Dr. Alexander Doolas. Even when faced with failing health, Marios never lost his sense of humor, his compassion for others, or his interest in life. He was always a gentleman, charming and courtly. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather and by his colleagues and patients as a skilled surgeon and a kind human being. He will be missed.
