Marion Doris StevensHartwig, age 88, passed away at home with family by her side on May 24, 2013 after a 4 year battle with lung cancer. Marion was born on March 9, 1925 in Wausau, Wisconsin to Harry and Edna Tasche Hartwig. She followed her dream of becoming a nurse and traveled by train with a friend to St. Louis, MO where she attended Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing. She stayed in St. Louis and worked in the surgery department and met the love of her life, Joseph Rudy Stevens, a young medical student whom she married two days after his graduation in 1950. They moved to Toledo shortly after that and aside from 6 months in Jamaica have been lifelong Toledoans. Marion was known as a fabulous cook and she had a knack for reading a recipe and knowing if it was going to be good. She loved sewing and knitting and had other interests outside of the home including gardening, raising orchids, following the Sunday morning political shows and traveling to horse shows with her youngest daughter, Julie. Marion loved babies and had a comforting way with them. In her last months she found much joy in holding her infant great granddaughters. She was a voracious reader of almost anything but especially mysteries and cookbooks. Marion became interested in genealogy and took computer classes so she could do research on her family and Rudys. Her research included traveling throughout the Midwest and as far as Germany with her stepsister, Kay. She and Rudy loved many trips to Jamaica, medical missions to the Dominican Republic, visiting their son, Joe, in Colorado, daughter, Karen in Minnesota and finally a long awaited river cruise on the Mississippi for their 50th wedding anniversary. She really loved their many years at Carpenter Lake in Reading, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her stepmother Edna Hartwig. Surviving are her loving husband, Joseph Rudy Stevens M.D.; children, Christine EpsteinHoward, Karen HuppAlan, Claire McHughPatrick, JosephAlison, PeterDawn, James, and Julie WalkerJohn; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; brother Clark Hartwig Ila Mae; step siblings Bruce Hartwig, Kay Boatwright and Anne Hartwig. Special thanks to all her caregivers over the last 18 months, but especially Barb, Karalyn, T.J., Denise and Courtney; also Angel, Stacey and Pat from Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
