Marietta (nee Hackworth) Hall, a long time resident of Toledo and Ottawa Hills, passed away on Friday August 3, 2018 at the age of 72 with family and close friends at her side. Marietta fought her diagnosis of lung cancer and continued to make every effort to live her life to the fullest for 8 incredible years with her husband of 50 years, Gerald. Marietta was born the 8th of 10 children of Ransom Hackworth and Elva (Tackett) Hackworth on December 18th, 1945 in Alvada, OH. After graduating from Carey High School, Marietta went into a nursing training program in Bowling Green, OH and received a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1967. After her marriage in 1968, Marietta worked for approximately 12 years at Toledo Hospital before joining the Sunforest OB-GYN practice in West Toledo, where she would spend the remainder of her career in women’s health, retiring in 2012 two years after her diagnosis. Marietta was a consummate caregiver and loved her work as a nurse for young and expecting mothers immensely, even as the demands and hours of outpatient medicine grew exponentially in her career. Outside of her work, Marietta, was equally generous with her helping hands and open heart, and nursed and counseled many sick family members, friends, and even neighbors in times of need. Marietta also had many hobbies and interests, including gardening, knitting, cross-stich, and others. She attended several sewing weekend retreats in Lakeside OH where she would be happy to see old friends and to meet other women with similar interests. Outside of her work and hobbies, Marietta valued spending time with her family and friends. She had many friends, and nurtured and valued her friendships as much through laughs and her willingness to lend a listening ear to hosting and visiting her friends, regular phone calls, quick notes in the mail and always-on-time birthday and holiday cards. She and Jerry loved to dine out, take walks with their dog, and to travel together, including memorable trips to Alaska, Europe, Hawaii, the Caribbean and other destinations in the US and abroad. Marietta is survived by her husband, Gerald; her sons, Eric Joseph Hall (Jessica Mallett) of Toledo and Michael John Hall (Olen Hsu) of Philadelphia; and her grandson, William Hall; her sisters, Charlene Steininger (Don) and Erma Cox (Jesse); her brothers, Payne Hackworth, Jake Hackworth (Connie), Coly Hackworth (Reta) and Doug Hackwork (Rosie); and over 40 nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband’s parents, Roy and Freda Hall; her sister, Alice Maynard; her brothers, Cotton Hackworth and Eldon Hackworth; her husband’s siblings and their spouses, Kenneth (Barbara) Hall, James Hall, and Mary (Walter) Taylor. A viewing will take place at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, OH 43623 on Thursday, August 9th from 2-9 PM. The funeral will occur Friday, August 10th at 10:00 AM in the funeral home. Interment at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to make donations on Marietta’s behalf to the Victory Center of Toledo OH, an organization supporting cancer patients and survivors that brought Marietta immeasurable support and hope during her many year struggle with cancer.
