Marie D. Verkin, beloved mother and grandmother, 93, of Genoa, Ohio, passed away on April 2, 2015, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home, Port Clinton, Ohio. She was born in Clay Center, Ohio, on February 6, 1922, to parents, John and Mary Valko, who preceded her in death. She was married to Andrew Verkin on June 10, 1939, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Genoa, Ohio, and was happily married for over 70 years. Marie lived in the Genoa area her entire life, residing at the Genoa Retirement Village for the past seven years. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she was very active. She was a member of the St. Anne’s Study Club, the Rosary Altar Society, the Knights of Columbus Ladies’ Auxiliary, and the Prayer Shawl Committee. Marie crocheted over 300 prayer shawls, completing her final one in December. She was employed at the Yankee Pedlar in Genoa for over twenty-five years. Marie was a very caring person and loved by everyone she met. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Andrew Verkin, her son Richard, her sister Rosella Szypka, and her parents, John and Mary Valko. She is survived by her son, Edward (Elaine) Verkin of Port Clinton, her grandchildren, Cynthia Johnson, Christine (Thomas) Smit, Edward Jr. (Deborah) Verkin of Port Clinton, and Kathleen (David) Matts of Albuquerque, NM, as well as nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be at the Robinson-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 501 West St., Genoa, on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, from 2-8 p.m. A prayer service will be conducted at 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 204 Main St., Genoa, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, with burial to follow in Clay Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you perform an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in Marie’s memory.
