MARIE E. SNYDER Marie E. Snyder, 93, Perrysburg teacher, civil leader, and historian, died Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the Kingston Residence in Perrysburg. She was born in Bremerton, WA on March 20, 1921 to Joseph and Adeline (Trottier) Evans and was married in 1951 to Marvin L. Snyder who preceded her in death on March 10, 1990. Marie received her B.S. Ed. at B.G.S.U. and her M.A. and M.S. from Western Michigan University. She worked for over 38 years as an elementary school teacher, 35 of which was in Perrysburg schools. She served for 12 years on the Perrysburg City Council and was responsible for the inauguration and implantation of the concept of a Safety Town for preschoolers that has become a model for many communities. For this program she received a Valley Forge Freedom Foundation award. Marie was a former member in many historical, anthropological, and archaeological organizations and also was a former trustee of Fort Meigs Cemetery, the A.A.U.W., Garden Club, B.P.W., Perrysburg Chapter #446 O.E.S., and White Shrine of Jerusalem. She also received numerous awards including the Community Leader of America Award (3 times), Freedom Foundation Scholarship, and Teacher’s Medal, the Martha Jennings Scholarship, and the Girl Scouts of America Outstanding Leader Award. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Perrysburg. She is survived by her daughter, Janet M. (Wesley) Jackson, of Hayward, CA; sister, Joann (Richard) Lowry of Perrysburg, niece, Susan Machaterre and nephews, Robert (Dianne) Lowry, Steven (Denise) Lowry, Mark Snyder and Bryan Snyder. She was also preceded in death by her son, Jerry M. Snyder on Oct. 13, 2000. Friends will be received from 3-7 P.M. on Sunday, July 27th in the Witzler-Shank Funeral Home, 222 E. South Boundary, Perrysburg, OH (419-874-3133). Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 28, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 W. Second St. in Perrysburg with Pastor Eric McGlade officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Meigs Cemetery. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or to the Black Swamp Conservancy, 132 W. Second St. Ste B, Perrysburg, OH 43551. The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio and of The Kingston Residence for all of the loving care given to Marie.
