Marian E. Hamm

April 2, 1933 — August 14, 2015

Marian Hamm, age 82, passed away Friday, August 14, 2015, at St. Mercy-St. Annes Hospital in Toledo. Marian was born April 2, 1933 in upstate New York to Leona and Addison Ekey. She grew up in West Carthage, New York, where she graduated from high school before moving to New York City. Marian graduated from Roosevelt Hospital in 1953 with a degree in nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the operating rooms at Roosevelt and later at Easton Hospital in Pennsylvania in the medical surgery units, OR, and obstetrics. Marian, married her husband Donald in 1955 and would have celebrated their 60th Wedding anniversary this Oct. She began working at the former Riverside Hospital as a nurse and she expanded her role there to nursing instructor, nursing administrator, and eventually Senior Vice-President over a period of 24 years. Marian also held a number of professional leadership roles in the community of nursing. She was an officer of the Ohio Society for Nursing Administrators, and a charter member of the Nursing Honor Society (Sigma Theta Tau). Marian continued her education after moving to Toledo and received her Bachelor of Science degree from the former Mary Manse College, and her Master of Science and Education in Public Health from the University of Toledo. Following her tenure at Riverside Hospital, she joined the executive staff at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH and served there for over 10 years. She was honored to receive the Heart of Riverside award at both hospitals. Marians love of family and understanding of family dynamics inspired her leadership in developing a hospital-wide focus on a patient/family system of care at RMH in Columbus. Following retirement in 1995, Marian studied Clinical Pastoral Education and became a volunteer chaplain at a number of area hospitals and nursing homes. She was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church and served on their Pastoral Council and as a Eucharistic Minister. Marian often expressed how fortunate she was to be able to pursue her professional interests while enjoying a loving family and many supportive friends.
