Maria Novak, 89, of Toledo, OH passed away on Monday, March 14, 2022 at Otterbein Sunset House. She was born on December 12, 1932 in Goriča Vas, near Ribnica in present day Slovenia. She was the youngest daughter of Jože and Frančiška (Ilc) Bolha.
Maria received an accounting degree in 1950 in Ljubljana. She later came to the United States, and married Bogdan C. Novak on September 5, 1964 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Maria was known for her European baked goods, which she made with love and precision. She enjoyed working in her yard which she tended with the same attention to detail. She was a supporter of her husband, Bogdan, who was a European History Professor at The University of Toledo. Maria was a 58-year member of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church. Despite not being able to attend regular Mass there for the last 6 years, she enjoyed live streaming services and reading the Sunday bulletins.
Maria is survived by her loving nieces and nephews Maria Povsic, Anica (Ron) Grebenc-Chufo, Thomas (Lisa) Povsic and Tanya (Michael) Novak; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Slovenia. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, infant daughter Barbara, and siblings Angela, Jože, Francka, Ivana, Nežka, Anica and France, and in-laws Slavko “Lou” and Poldi Novak.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, March 19, 2022 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Christ the King Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo, OH 43623. A Memorial Mass will follow the visitation at 10:30 am. Burial will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family would like to thank the following people who looked after Maria in many ways: her neighbors when she still lived on Homerdale Drive, Dr. Lawrence Elmer, her neurologist who helped give Maria several more months with her family, the staff at the Woodlands as well as the staff, caregivers and therapists at Sunset House on both Sunflower Lane and Harmony Lane, whose work there is a calling not just a job. Even though most of Maria’s family predeceased her, Maria found family at the Indian Road address. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop Baraga Association in Marquette, MI and Christ the King Church. Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home, Toledo, OH (419-841-2422).Christ the King
