Maria N. Kanios

Maria N. Kanios of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Ebeid Hospice Center on December 11, 2023. She was 93 years old.

Born in Itea, Central Greece on August 26, 1930, she and her mother emigrated to the United States in 1948 to join her father and her brother in Detroit, Michigan. While in Detroit, Maria attended and graduated from Southwestern High School and subsequently was employed by the New York Central Railroad as a clerk/typist.

In 1950 she married the love of her life Nicholas P. Kanios, then a General Manager for the John Hancock Insurance Company. Together, they raised two children--Peter and Chris--in Livonia, Michigan where Maria settled into her role as homemaker.

The family came to Sylvania, Ohio in 1970 as a result of Nicholas' promotional transfer. There, Maria took an active role in her church, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and was heavily involved with the Philoptochos women's auxiliary as well as with the 'Young at Heart' seniors group.

Maria was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Chris Kanios (Steven), son Peter, grandchildren Nichole, Mary and James, great-grandchild Theo and numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to convey its gratitude to Dr. John Valade and the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio Ebeid Hospice Center for the loving and compassionate care she received. Visitation will be Friday morning, December 15, 2023, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 740 N Superior St., Toledo, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the funeral service commencing at 11 a.m. Those wishing to make a contribution in Maria's memory are asked to consider Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

A highly family-oriented individual; a superb, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and, for her family and friends, a cook second to none, Maria will be missed.
