Marguerite “Peg” Connelly, 87, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday October 2, 2022 at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Peg was born June 5, 1935 in Lima, Ohio to Joseph and Marguerite (Costello) O’Connor. She graduated from Lima Central Catholic High School in 1953 where she was both a cheerleader and the Homecoming Queen. After high school she enrolled at the Ohio State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Education. During her time at Ohio State she was a member of the synchronized swim team, the Delta Gamma Sorority and the 1954 homecoming court.
In 1957 she married her Lima hometown sweetheart Robert Connelly while both were enrolled at separate universities. Despite the long distance, Bob would drive or hitchhike from Cincinnati to Columbus every chance he could in order to spend time together. An expert with a sewing machine, people were always amazed when they learned that Peg stitched her own wedding dress as well as all of the dresses for her bridesmaids.
Peg was steadfast in her commitment to family, raising eight children. Although she sometimes put her teaching degree to use and briefly worked as a realtor, her heart was always at home. Sporting events were a common family activity and whether she was taking somebody to practice or sitting on the sidelines watching a competition Peg was always involved and very supportive. Blessed with tremendous patience and compassion she also helped nurture and raise six dogs, several litters of kittens, two cows, a fox, a horse, and a donkey named Eeyore. She will always be remembered for her cooking and baking and her homemade pizza and chocolate fudge were family favorites. Peg was extremely proud of her Irish heritage which she shared with all of her children. When it came to her family she was completely selfless in every regard.
Peg was also completely enamored with her fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A member of the Toledo Zoo she frequently took them to visit with the animals, view the Christmas lights and listen to the music under the stars. She also often took them to the Maumee Bay Resort where they would spend time together enjoying the lodge, bird watching or even hiking on one of the nature trails. A few of the grandchildren were even lucky enough to accompany their grandmother to the University of Notre Dame campus to watch the fighting Irish play football. When visiting with her at home she taught many of the grandchildren how to cook, sew, knit and even how to use her loom. Peg truly treasured spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, teaching them life skills and showing them the places around town that she loved the most.
Peg is survived by her children Barbara Connelly, Robert (Lisa) Connelly, Linda Connelly, Daniel (Lynn) Connelly, Richard (Miriana) Connelly, John Connelly, Stephen (Sarah) Connelly; grandchildren Sarah, Shannon, Jacquie, Maria, Louis, Megan, Natalie, John, Alison, Maureen, Ally, Ben, Caitlin, and Caroline Connelly; great grandchildren Claire and Marco Vicenzo, Emmalynn, Julianne and Brooks Connelly, and Ella and Jacob Connelly; sister Beth (Peter) Harveson.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents Joseph and Marguerite O’Connor, her son William, her siblings Jack and Jim O’Connor and her sister Patricia Polito.
The family would like to thank the staff at Story Point Senior Living in Waterville, Witzler–Shank–Walker Funeral Home, the Reverend Kyle Gase and the Helping Hands of St. Rose for the love and care that they provided for Peg these past few weeks.
