Margaret Guess

June 13, 1933 — June 6, 2019

MARGARET ANN GUESS With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Margaret Anne Guess (Marge), our loving mother and friend to all whose lives she touched, on June 6, 2019. Margaret was a resident of St. Clare’s Commons in Perrysburg Ohio for the past several years. Margaret was born in Toledo Ohio on June 13, 1933, to Patrick and Marie (Baron) McHugh. She was the youngest of four children. She grew up in East Toledo and graduated from Central Catholic High School. Margaret married Boyd Garth Guess in 1952. They lived in San Antonio, Texas while Boyd was enlisted in USAF. They returned to Toledo after his discharge and raised their expanding family in East Toledo the Old West End and Maumee Ohio. She was the mother of five: Michael (Jeanne), Thomas, James (Donna) Guess, Michelle Smith Fowler (David), Maribeth Moser (Robert). Margaret was the proud grandmother of 9 grandchildren; Scott (Anne), Matt (Jessica), Andrew (Vebeka) Guess, Josh (Christina) and Jacob (Megan) Smith, Lauren (Michael) Collins, John (Casey) Moser and Meghan Moser. Margaret had 16 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Boyd Garth, sister Rita Scheneke, brothers Thomas and Patrick McHugh; grandson Garett Guess and great grandson McGuire Smith. She lived a full life as a wonderful mother and nurse where she worked for 20 years at St. Charles and Mercy Hospital. At retirement, her and dad moved to sunny Bonita Springs, Florida where they enjoyed life together for 16 years before she moved back to Toledo in 2008, to be closer to the family. She loved to bake (best pies in town) and paint with water colors. In addition, she also enjoyed the occasional outing to the casino where she could turn ten dollars into two hundred. When it came to an ice cream treat it was always the turtle sundae at Mr. Freeze and we cannot forget a coney dog from Tony Packos; her favorite. We will also remember the great summers we spent up at the cottage on Black Lake in Michigan and the numerous times she took us to Cedar Point. It was a simple and easy life back then in which we all miss. Some of the sayings that have stayed with us to this day are “Go outside and play and dinner is at five o’clock”. That always meant, don’t come inside and mess up the house. “Wait until your Dad comes home”. But if you ever saw her bite her tongue then you really knew you were in trouble for something. Mom must have done everything right because each one of us are great parents and great cooks (except Tommy who is single, but still a great cook). Margaret went by many names, Aunt Margie, Mimi, Grandma but the name that will be missed the most is Mom. She loved her family and instilled in her children strong values that have served them well. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A celebration of life mass will be held on Friday, June 21, 2019, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Maumee Ohio, starting at 10:30 am. Immediately following, we will have a luncheon for family and friends at Saint Joseph’s Family Center adjacent to Church. A private burial will be held at Calvary (Toledo) Cemetery where she will be buried with her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Maumee, https://stjosephmaumee.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities Hospice of Northwest Ohio, https://www.hospicenwo.org/forms/donate-online-now/ or Central Catholic High School, https://www.centralcatholic.org/gifts-and-giving/
