Margaret Elinor Doresco, age 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at the Perrysburg Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Margaret was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada on September 13, 1928, to the late Robert and Matilda Twaddle. Margaret was always active - as a teenager, she and her friends would ride their bicycles from her home in St. Catharines to Queenston Heights, a 20-mile trip that ended with a steep climb to the Brock Monument. Thankfully, the ride home was much easier!
Margaret's love story with George began at a baseball game in St. Catharines, where she often went to cheer on her brother Robert, a talented athlete. It was at one of these games that she was spotted by the catcher - a young man named George Doresco. Determined and charming, he would hop on the back of a friend's motorbike to follow Margaret's bus home, calling out her name. They were married on April 1, 1950, and together raised three children, building a life rooted in love, friendship, and shared adventures.
As a young adult, Margaret worked as a private secretary before devoting herself to raising a family with George. She was always involved in her community with activities focused on what she cherished most: music, young people, her faith and her friends.
In 1970, Margaret and George moved to Toledo, Ohio, for George's work with Dana Corporation, returning briefly to Canada before settling permanently in Maumee, Ohio, in 1977. Their home on Manley Road quickly became a place of warmth and welcome. Margaret, always ready to meet new people, formed deep and lasting friendships with neighbours who remained close to her throughout her life. Even after moving to a new neighborhood later in life, Margaret built a wonderful community of friends - a testament to her zest for life and kindness that made her so special. Her family would like to thank her neighbors for always looking out for her!
A devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee, Ohio, Margaret gave generously of her time as a volunteer with the Altar Guild and the church's semi-annual rummage sales. Her commitment to her faith and community she found at St. Paul's was central to her life, providing her with strength and joy. She loved to read and shared the passion with a close group of friends in the St. Paul's Book Club, even selecting the December book (Mr. Dickens and his Carol) for the final meeting she attended. Through the church, she also participated in the Toledo Museum of Art Group, enjoying docent-led tours of new exhibits several times a year, always eager to learn something new.
Growing up in Canada, Margaret and George were dedicated curlers. Upon moving to Toledo, they joined the Bowling Green Curling Club. Margaret had a successful curling career - winning
several ladies' club championships as well as mixed bonspiels with George. A longtime member of the Inverness Club, she was the nine-hole Ladies Golf Champion five times between 1992 and 1998 and received a legacy award in 2017. After retiring from golfing, Margaret started bowling with a great group of women, earning "most improved" honors several years in a row. While she loved the activities, it was the laughter and friendships that meant the most to her.
Margaret also supported and volunteered with numerous organizations close to her heart, including the Toledo Symphony League, where she served as a past Board member and chairperson for multiple fundraising events, the Flower Hospital Auxiliary, and the Ability Center. She had memberships with the Toledo Zoo, the Toledo Museum of Art, and Metroparks Toledo - always eager to support institutions that enriched the local community.
Gardening, reading, puzzles, church activities, and time with family and friends filled her days, and she was always ready to head out the door for a new experience. As an avid gardener who could never visit Hoen's without bringing a plant or two, and a member of the Byrnwyck Garden Club, she was most proud of her Christmas cactus, a temperamental plant passed down through generations of her family for over one hundred years.
Above all else, Margaret loved her family. She took great joy in spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren, delighting in each of them as individuals and celebrating both their differences and similarities. She nourished her friendships - writing letters, sending cards, and staying in touch. A friend described Margaret as someone that "collected people", a reflection of her gift for making others feel seen, valued, and welcome. She will be deeply missed by her family and by the many friends whose lives she touched.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband of 55 years, George Doresco; her daughter, Marcia Bauer; her sister, Maureen Twaddle, and her brothers, Robert Twaddle (Ruth) and Dennis Twaddle (Janet).
She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kathryn Doresco, and her son, Paul Doresco; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Hilts (Matthew), David Bauer, Patrick Tessier, Rebecca Tessier (Denis Zgonjanin) and Emily Waldren (Thomas); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Spencer and Gabriella Hilts, and Winston and Whitaker Waldren.
In accordance with Margaret's wishes, a celebration of life will be held on June 13, 2026, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church to allow family and friends time to gather. More details will be shared closer to the date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to one of the following organizations that were so important to Margaret: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The Toledo Symphony and The Toledo Museum of Art on the Walker Funeral Home website.
The family is deeply grateful to the team at Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their kindness, compassion, and care during Margaret's final days.
