Luella “Cookie” Schramm died on Saturday, January 3rd at Otterbein in Perrysburg after a long illness. Cookie was born in Toledo Ohio on February 7, 1935 to Leora (Bouya) and Clarence Bohland. She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and on November 20, 1954 she married DeLoy Schramm. They made their home in Perrysburg, Ohio and began their family of four children. Besides being a busy homemaker, Cookie volunteered as a Girl Scout leader for many years, and also actively campaigned for political candidates she believed in. Mom proudly attended Jimmy Carter’s Inauguration with her friend Bernie McCloud, and faithfully worked the polling station at every election. She had several jobs over the years and one of her favorites was working for Bruce Roberts Interiors. Mom had a flair for decorating and loved the many shades of green. Her passion for collecting antiques led to a career at the Antique Mall acquainting her with many more lifelong friends. She and Dad frequently traveled together to participate in shows and search for more treasures. In 2005 they drove to Alaska exploring much of the United States and Canada. Mom was active at the Rossford Eagles, where she was a past President of the Auxiliary making many friends and organizing charitable events.
Mom had a talent for making all of us feel special, whether it was baking our favorite cake on our birthday, or hosting wonderful holiday meals for the family. Our daily family dinners at 5:00 sharp provided us with not only good nutrition but stories we still laugh about. Getting four children ready for church, shoes polished and hair ribbons in place every Sunday was an organizational feat worthy of a CEO position. As adults, we now marvel at how she managed it all.
She spent significant time with each Grandchild attending events and making each one feel as though they were her favorite. They will tell you that the cookie jar was always full and have fond memories of many hours playing in the backyard, swinging on the old wooden swing, and hanging out on the deck.
In 2012 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. As the disease progressed, she would often ask for her Mother. She had two of them who loved her very much. Her mother, Leora Bouya Bohland, died 8 days after giving birth to mom. Her father later married Mildred Farmer, and had 9 more children. Being the oldest of 10 children taught her mothering skills early on. Mom always told us to treat others the way you’d want to be treated. She raised us to look out for one another. The bonds we have as siblings are very strong to this day.
As a family we are forever grateful to the caregivers at Otterbein Pemberville and Perrysburg as well as Hospice of Northwest Ohio. They gave us peace of mind through all stages of the disease.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Deloy Schramm; her mother, Leora Bouya Bohland; the Mother who loved and raised her, Mildred Bohland; father, Clarence Bohland; brother, Edward Bohland; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bohland, Donna Bohland and Pricilla Bohland.
