Louis C. Schmitt

Louis C. Ben Schmitt died peacefully on January 5, 2013, with his family surrounding him, after a short stay at Ebied Hospice Residence. Louis was born on May 9, 1926, in Monroe, Michigan to George and Louise Hunsaker Schmitt. All his brothers and sisters, George, Gertrude, Doris Brady, and James preceded him in death. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the 84th Infantry. He fought, beginning at the Battle of the Bulge, through the end of the war. He became a Tool and Die Maker after completing his apprenticeship at Doehler-Jarvis. He remained there 38 years and worked his way up, retiring out of Engineering in 1982. He belonged to the Doehler Quarter Century Club. Lou was an avid outdoorsman spending his life hunting, fishing, boating, and camping with his family. He belonged to the Maumee Valley Travel Trailer Club and other sportsmens clubs over the years. Lou married Lois L. Wiese in June of 1947. They had two sons, George C. and Steven L. Schmitt. Lois died December 1992 after 45 years of marriage. Lou was blessed again in love and married Pauline Halfacre in November 1993. Polly died in August 2011. They were married nearly 18 years and lived in Louisville, Kentucky. Lou is survived by his sons, George and Steve Libby Schmitt; granddaughters, Amy Schmitt, Jennifer Jason Mann, both from Florida, and Amanda Christopher Johnson Schmitt from Chicago. He has 3 great-granddaughters, Ashley and Allison Mann, and Logan Peck. He has one sister-in-law, Donna Schmitt; nine nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and nephews remaining. Lou is also survived by his Kentucky family, step-sons, Jeffrey Karla Halfacre, Michael Kim Halfacre, Robert Susie Halfacre, Andy Debbie Halfacre, Gary Leslie Halfacre, and step-daughter, Paula Halfacre. He is also survived by 11 step grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to visit from 2-7 p.m. Wednesday, in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Avenue west of Corey, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday.
