Lorraine Scrivenor Coe

Lorraine "Puffin" Scrivenor Coe died peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on September 18, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. Puffin was born April 23, 1930, in New York City to Arthur Scrivenor Jr and Musa Liggett Scrivenor. She spent her high school years at Prospect Hill in New Haven, CT and then graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, VA.

Puffin returned to New Haven where she met and, on March 14, 1952, married Benjamin Coe, who predeceased her. They lived all over the country (New York, Ohio, Arizona, California and finally back to Ohio) based on the changes in Ben's job. She flourished everywhere, always finding the best to experience in each place.

Raising four daughters took most of Puffin's time and energy. In 1971 she began working outside the home, teaching in Toledo and Phoenix. After returning to Toledo, she began working as a realtor for Danberry, where many of her clients became lifelong friends.

Puffin had a heart for volunteering. She was a CASA for many years. She assisted with tax preparation as a volunteer. She served with the Junior League and with the Sunset House Auxiliary. She was an avid supporter of the Toledo Museum of Art, the Toledo Botanical Garden, and the Toledo Zoo. Puffin was a longtime member of St Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church and was awarded the St Michael's Medal for her service. She sang alto in the choir and helped take care of the St Francis courtyard garden.

Puffin and Ben loved to travel, exploring the US and the world with a treasured group of friends. Puffin and Ben attended Elder Hostels all over the US and traveled to Africa to visit their daughter who was there as a missionary. She went by herself on a spontaneous trip to London, meeting her grandson to enjoy his Spring break.

She loved sports, playing tennis long past when most people would have retired from the game. She took up golf in her 60s and did quite well. She loved watching sports on television, focusing on golf, football, college basketball and especially tennis. She always knew all of the backstories of the players. She was a voracious reader, a trait which she passed on to her daughters. She loved to suggest favorite books to her friends.

Puffin made friends wherever she lived, most recently at The Woodlands and Hospice of Northwest Ohio, where she built deep relationships. Family was most important to "Grandma Puff", even keeping up with her great-grandchildren using her iPad.

Puffin is survived by her daughters; Sharon Coe, Lisa (James) Jones, Nancy (Brian) Young, and Jenny (Joe) Elkjer, as well as thirteen grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care given to Puffin by Hospice of Northwest Ohio, the Visiting Angels aides and most especially Ashley Morgan, who made Puffin's last year less difficult.

Her Memorial Service will be held October 6th at 10:30 AM at St Michael's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4718 Brittany Rd, Toledo OH, with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St Michael's in the Hills or Hospice of Northwest Ohio
