Lois Atkinson Mast, age 79, of Toledo, OH, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Kingston, Sylvania, OH. She was born in Vineland, NJ, February 4, 1931, the daughter of Charles and Mildred Smith Atkinson. She held a BS degree and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Maryland. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and Phi Cappa Phi, as well as an Education Honorary at Maryland. She taught Kindergarten in Montgomery County, Maryland. She was active in Girl Scouting, serving as a Brownie and Junior Scout Leader, as well as being the Service Unit Director and Cookie Captain. She was the President of the Monac Mothers Club, Pres. of Bishop Chase Guild of St. Matthews Episcopal Church, as well as being a Kindergarten Sunday School Teacher for 9 years. She organized and directed the Bedford Co-op Nursery School in Temperance, MI and was a volunteer Zoo Educator at the Toledo Zoo since 1984. Her biggest enjoyment came from her family, children and taking care of the zoo animals. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Joseph M. Mast and children, Deb Keith Laycock, of Dallas, TX, Kathy Bob Marquardt, of Sylvania, OH and Jim Mast of Dallas TX and nine wonderful grandchildren, Mason, Paige and Laura Laycock, Bobby, Ryan and Justin Marquardt and Braden, Alex and Mackenzie Mast. We owe a special debt of gratitude to Jessica Aldrich, our angel on earth, Lois caregiver for the last 18 months of her life. We also wish to express of gratitude to Kingston of Sylvania; Sue Banks and her entire staff in the memory care unit, as well as to Lori Marko of Senior Care Independence Presbyterian Hospice, for their caring hearts and special care during these difficult months. They are all truly special individuals. There will be no visitation. Interment will be at a later date at Toledo Memorial Park. An open house celebrating Lois life will be held Saturday, December 18th, 2010, from 4-7 p.m. at the Marquardts home, 9313 St. Angelas Way, Sylvania, OH 43560. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Toledo Zoo, The Alzheimers Association, 2500 N. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH 43615, or the charity of the donors choice.
