Lewis W. Saxby, Jr. died May 23, 2012 at the age of 87. Lewis was born December 17, 1924 in Oak Park, IL to Lewis W. Saxby and Dorothy Porter. He worked for 41 years at Owens Corning Fiberglass beginning as a trainee in Newark, OH to operate the Santa Clara, California plant and retired as senior vice-president in Toledo, Ohio. During his career, Lew worked in manufacturing, specialty contracting, Building material distribution, marketing, division management, and administration. He played a major role in the trans-Atlantic pipeline insulation system and in the fiberglass fabric roof project over the Haj terminal in Jeddeh, Saudi Arabia. Lew graduated from the University of California Berkeley in February 1945 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and from Stanford University in June 1948 with an MBA in business administration. While at Berkeley, he went on active duty with the Naval R.O.T.C. He was active in the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, Tau Beta Pi, Order of the Golden Bear and the Big C society. He was commissioned an ensign in the US Navy upon graduation and served in the Pacific for one year on the USS Henderson DD785. He was a member of the American Legion Post 335. Lew was married to Kathryn Hutchinson on September 7, 1947 until her death on August 3, 1990. He is survived by three children, Steven Becky, Anne Saxby Gill Sharp, and Jane Primrose; six grandsons, David Erin and Dan Amy Saxby, Delaney Jennie and Garrett Pamela Sharp, Andrew and Nicholas Primrose; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his brother, Charles Mickey Willey. Lews sister, Suzanne Hutchinson and brother, Richard preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Kay Bellingham Taylor, who he married on January 23, 1993. Also surviving are Kays daughter, Jane Peter Elfers, and granddaughter, Claire. Lew was active in the Toledo Community serving on the boards of the Toledo Chamber of Commerce, Seagate Convention Center, Office of Tourism and Conventions and as chairman of a downtown long range planning committee. He was also active on the board of Junior Achievement of NW Ohio and on the National Board. He taught JA classes in the Toledo area schools. Lew enthusiastically supports the teaching of the American Business System to school children K-12. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church where he served on the Session and as Clerk of Session. Lew had a lifelong interest in sports including swimming, track and field, basketball, golf and tennis. As a member of the Inverness Club, he served on the Board of Governors. He had a passion for world travel that spanned over 40 years and included travel on all seven continents. Lew developed a lifelong interest in the history and culture of the worlds people. He enjoyed entertaining friends with slide presentations of remote and unusual places. After retirement, Lew served on the Board of Directors of Performance Contracting Group and Active Mineral, Inc. He was a member of the Toledo Zoo, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Museum of Art, Imagination Station, and the Toledo Club. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Christ Presbyterian Church, 4225 W. Sylvania Ave. Toledo, OH 43623.
