Leroy C. Herdman

Herdman Leroy Clifford Leroy C. Herdman, 93, passed away August 9, 2011 in Springfield, Ohio. He was born March 25, 1918 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Richard and Sodonia Ott Herdman. He was also preceded in death by his devoted wife of 65 years, Grace Edna Alliman; eldest son, Larry Herdman; daughter, Roberta Miller and grandson, Sean Miller. Leroy served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Essex during W.W. II and was the recipient of 17 battle stars. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a technical degree in Drafting and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Leroy worked at Owens-Illinois and taught drafting at UTs Scott Park Campus. In 1959, he relocated his family to Springfield, Ohio where he was employed by Steel Products. In 1967, he went to work at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a civilian project engineer. Leroy received numerous awards in the testing/evaluation field pertaining to various missile programs and was instrumental in the development of the Maverick Missile. He retired in 1986. Leroy and Grace moved to Brooksville, Florida to enjoy ten years in the sunshine state. In 1996, they returned to Springfields Oakwood Village Retirement Community. During Leroys many active years he truly enjoyed family get-togethers, playing golf, cards, bowling, and watching sports on TV. Leroy was a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the Elks and Toastmasters. Survivors include sons, Leroy Dick Gwyneth Herdman of New Carlisle, and Jon Kate Herdman of Toledo; grandchildren, John Herdman, Lori Herdman, Kathryn Herdman, Julie Berjaoui, Richard Dina Herdman, Carla Aaron Lee, Joseph Valerie Herdman, Pam Miller, Jonathan Herdman, and Hilary Herdman; and numerous great-grandchildren. Leroy is also survived by his half-brother, Art James of California, and half-sister, Donna James Mather of Toledo. Visitation will be on Monday, August 15th from 11:30 AM until 2:30 PM at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave. West of Corey Rd. in Toledo, Ohio. Funeral services will be at 2:30 pm on Monday at the funeral home followed by interment at Toledo Memorial Park. www.walkerfuneralhomes.com
