Leota A. Gunn, 98, of Toledo, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Toledo to John and Elsie (Striggow) Whitenburg on December 28, 1925. Leota, affectionately referred to as “Odie” was a devout member of Douglas Road Wesleyan Church and kept a close relationship with her faith. She worked over 20 years as a cook at Ottawa Lanes Bowling Alley before retiring and was a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary 2898. Odie loved camping and made some of the best homecooked meals anyone could ever imagine. She was skilled at crocheting and was most proud of being a grandmother.
Leota is survived by her children, Elsie (Steve) Hawes, Floyd (Patti) Gunn, Lori (Bruce) Szmania; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Cliff Whitenburg; and many other extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lauren Gunn, Sr.; children, Patty Gunn, Lauren “Butch” Gunn, Jr., John “Bus” Gunn, Darlene Geiser; and seven siblings.
Friends will be received on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 2-7 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Avenue, Toledo, OH 43623. Visitation will continue Saturday, March 30, 2024, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home, until the time of funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to her special niece, “little Terry Burkholder” and her family for their continuous support. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly suggests donations be made to Elara Hospice or to the Douglas Road Wesleyan Church.
