Jesus wrapped His arms around Leona on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 and whisked her away to heaven. Born April 6, 1918, Leona was the 5th of 12 children born to Emma and Roy Johnson. Her entire life was devoted to faithfully serving her Lord, her husband, 11 children, 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, and church and volunteer work. She was always there for everyone with her unconditional love and helping hands. During the war years, Leona worked at the Autolite where she met her husband, George Chovanec Jr. A woman of deep faith, she belonged to St. Marys Altar and Rosary Sodality. She was a hostess/ sponsor for St. Josephs RCIA, a Eucharistic Minister; she provided homemade food (her apple pie was famous!) for Agape, Lilies of the Field and other organizations serving the poor. At the age of 70, she walked 120 miles raising funds for Habitat for Humanity. She was inducted into the St. Mary Hall of Fame. At 2 am, rain or snow, Leona drove to Maumee for Perpetual Adoration. She attended daily Mass. Leona was a Precinct volunteer and Red Cross blood donor. While raising her 11 children, she was caregiver for her mother and her mother-in-law, both of whom died in Leonas home. An avid, award winning quilter, Leona loved to swim, walk, bike, play cards and travel. She is survived by her children, Susan Dick (Bobby), Nancy Chovanec, Tim Chovanec (Amy), Stephen Chovanec (Jennifer), Joseph Chovanec (Susan), Patricia Wilson (Ron), Mark Chovanec (Carol), George Chovanec III (Elizabeth), Christine Martens (Ron), Pauline Wallace (Tony), and Marygrace Miller-Wilcox. Also surviving are her sisters, Sister Ruth Johnson, and Mary Jo DiValerio. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Chovanec, Jr.; her grandchild, Carrie Chovanec, great grandchild, Quinn Chovanec; brothers, Phil, Mark, Lawrence, Bernard, Bill and Leon Johnson and sisters, Lois Forgette, Susan Harley, Marie Dominque, and son-in-law, Skip Wilcox. Friends and family will be received at the Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, 501 Conant Street, Maumee, Ohio on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service at 7:00 PM. Prayers will start at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 9:30 AM and continue with a Funeral Mass celebrated at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 Broadway Street, Maumee, Ohio.
