Lawrence J. Loughlin, Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and formerly of Ottawa Hills, Ohio , passed away late Monday, December 7th, 2009 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born on February 9, 1932 in Toledo, Ohio to Lawrence, Sr. and Ruth Catherine Rassel Loughlin. Larry attended Ladyfield and Gesu Catholic schools in Toledo and Campion Preparatory High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He studied at Cornell University, University of Toledo and received his bachelors degree from Michigan State University. He was a member and past-president of Psi Upsilon fraternity and also a member of Kappa Beta Phi. Larry worked for Toledo Concrete Pipe Co. now known as Independent Concrete Pipe Co. for over 40 years retiring as president in 1993. He was a former board member of the Buckeye Concrete Pipe Co. president; the Cincinnati Concrete Pipe Co.; Price Brothers Independent, St. Louis, Missouri, and Independent Concrete Pipe Co. Larry was also a longtime member of American Concrete Pipe Association serving on various committees throughout the years; Ohio Concrete Pipe Association, where he was past-president and the American Society for Testing Materials. Larry was a member, for over 50 years, of the Inverness Club, the Toledo Club, Knights of Columbus and an honorary life member of the Toledo Elks. Also, he enjoyed memberships in the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo Zoo, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Ducks Unlimited, Great Lakes Senior Golf Association and the Par Club. He was a member of Coral Ridge Country Club in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art and Performing Arts Center of Ft. Lauderdale. Larry had many passions including a love of hunting that was passed on from his father. He also enjoyed fishing especially in Northern Michigan and St. Huberts Lodge, which the Pipe Co. leased for many years, in Quebec, Canada. He was an avid reader, reading four newspapers daily besides many periodicals. He also worked all the cross word puzzles daily. He enjoyed his golf games and grew up playing at the Inverness Club with family and friends, one of whom was Frank Stranahan, world known Amateur Champion. They had many friendly handicapped matches. He loved horse racing and was fortunate to have visited all of the prominent horse racing tracks throughout the United States and Europe. He and his wife, Nancy, loved to travel and were frequent visitors to Europe. They enjoyed yearly trips abroad for over fifteen years. Larry is survived by his wife Nancy J. Streib Smith Loughlin; step-children, Hunter Elizabeth Eichhorn and R. Campbell Smith, III Penny; grandsons, Chase Campbell Eichhorn, R. Campbell Smith, IV, Spencer Thorn Smith, and granddaughter, Preston Teaghen Smith; and 9 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, John Patrick, Caroline, Suzanne Marie Donoghue, and Barbara Ann Maxson. Friends may call at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave. west of Corey on Thursday from 3 to 8 pm with a Scripture Service at 7 pm. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Gesu Church, 2049 Parkside on Friday at 10 am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gesu Roman Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside, Toledo, Ohio, 43607 or Hospice of Northwest Ohio, 30000 E. River Rd., Perrysburg, Ohio 43551.
