Lawrence J. Damas, age 91, passed away on Sunday January 16, 2011. Lawrence was born September 26, 1919, in his familys home on Superior Street in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and Hudla Damas. He was the youngest of 10 children. He attended LaGrange Elementary School, Woodward High School where he was the Vice President of the Literary Guild in 1937, and the University of Toledo. Lawrence joined the United States Army in June 1941 and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a Surgical Technician with the 4th General Hospital in Melbourne, Australia; Finch Haven, New Guinea; and Manila, Philippines. He reached the rank of Technician Fourth Grade and was Honorably Discharged in October 1945. Lawrence started a family business with his siblings in 1950 which consisted of ownership and property management in Toledo and throughout Northwest Ohio; of which he has continued to operate. He was employed with the Ohio Department of Highways in 1950 and was an inspector on the original Craig Bridge. He moved to the City of Toledo Department of Traffic Engineering in 1953 from which he retired in 1981. He was a lifelong member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral where he volunteered his time with SOYO, the Junior League, Teen SOYO and the altar servers. He also was the Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 176 in the South End. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 43 years, Margaret Ruth Meek Damas; his children; Debra Lynn Thomas Radwanski, Lawrence Joseph Andrea Damas II, and Michael Joseph Trina Damas II; and the loves of his life, his grandchildren; Victoria Radwanski, Daniel Julia Radwanski, Amanda Radwanski; Nathan, Mary, Lyla, Ziya, and Myka Damas. He is also survived by his brother Fredrick Damas and favorite sister-in-law Zuella Czerniak along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and especially his little buddy Brutus. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sisters, Mary, Naza, Faye, Francis, Katherine, and Elizabeth and brothers, James, and Michael. Friends may call at the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 W. Sylvania Ave., on Wednesday January 19th, 2011 from 2-8:00pm with Trisagion Prayers of Mercy for the repose of his soul at 7:30 pm. The funeral will be served at St. George Orthodox Cathedral 3754 Woodley Rd, on Thursday January 20th, 2011 at 11:00 am. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral 3754 Woodley Rd, Toledo, Ohio 43606-1159, Hospice of Northwest Ohio, or the charity of their choice. The family would like to thank those that have helped take care of Lawrence specifically those on the Fifth Floor of Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Heatherdowns Rehabilitation Residential Care Center and Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Detroit Avenue.
