Laverne L. Bartens, 94, a resident of the Catawba Island community, died Sunday, December 6, 2020 at H. B. Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 27, 1926 to the late Paul and Clara (Frank) Bachman. She met the love of her life, Jergen E. Bartens and were married February 1, 1947 in Kentucky. He preceded her in death. Laverne enjoyed working as a bank teller for several years, although her true love was her husband and family. She was a strong and independent woman raising her family and striving to give them the tools to be the best they could be. After Jergen passed away she continued to live an active and full life. She was always looking to take on new challenges, even learning to ride a scooter into her 70’s. During Ohio’s cold winters she lived in Florida until she turned 84 and then moved back to Northern Ohio to stay. She always loved to cook family meals and bake goodies; her peach cobbler was the most requested treat. She will be missed, but her family and friends will remember her well when they smell a peach cobbler baking! Laverne is survived by her children, Dale E. Bartens, Bruce P. Bartens and Diane L. Price, grandchildren, Keith, Scott, Tim and Tom Price and Nicholas Kononchik, great grandchildren, Logan & Jocelyn Price, Stephanie Wong, Kyle & Matthew Price, Sarah Kenny and Amanda Chillean along with her great-great grandson, Felix Wong. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother Clarence Bachman. Laverne will be buried next to her husband, Jergen, at Brooklyn Heights Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio. A memorial service will be scheduled later. To honor Lavern’s memory, spend some time with your family and maybe try making a peach cobbler. Arrangements are being handled by the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St., Port Clinton, Ohio.
