Laura P. Young, 28, of Daytona Beach, FL, and formerly of Port Clinton, OH, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, April 26, 2014, at her residence. Laura was born on March 17, 1986, in Port Clinton, OH, the daughter of Douglas and Kay Toney Young. Laura graduated in 2004 from Port Clinton High School where she enjoyed participating in band and served as field commander of the marching band for 3 years. During her high school years, Laura worked as a lifeguard at the high school, the Catawba Island Club and as a sailing instructor at Lakeside, OH. She was active in the Port Clinton Yacht Club junior sailing program and competed in the Hobie Wave Nationals in Florida. In 2008 Laura graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree with an English major. While at the Academy, she served as a Company Administrative Officer and Squad Leader, she was the sailing instructor for the plebe freshman class, and she was chosen to represent the USNA for a study program in Paris, France. During Plebe Summer 2007, Laura served as Regimental Assistant Operations Officer at the Academy where she created and oversaw the schedule for 1000 first year students. Upon graduation, she was commissioned as a U.S. Naval Officer, Ensign. Laura began her Naval career stationed at Norfolk, VA, while she resided in Virginia Beach. As Assistant Diversity Officer, Laura was one of only three officers responsible for organizing and conducting the Womens Waterfront Symposium for approximately 300 Navy personnel in the Norfolk area. As Assistant Manpower Liaison Officer, one of Lauras major accomplishments was planning and implementing an office relocation for Command Naval Surface Forces Atlantic for which she received the Navy Achievement Medal for exemplary execution. After Norfolk, Laura resided in Oxford, England, for a year and traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 2012, Laura relocated to Daytona Beach, FL, to continue her education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. In addition to her life-long love of water activities, Lauras interests included sewing and various other crafts, birding and photography. Survivors include her parents, Douglas and Kay Young of Port Clinton, OH; her brother Nathan Young of Chicago; paternal grandfather Charles Young of Lake Placid, FL; and several loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Laura was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Erma Webb and Leslie Toney and paternal grandmother Peggy Powell Hofelich. Visitation will be 5-7 PM Friday, May 30, 2014, at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home and Crematory, Port Clinton, OH, followed by a funeral service at 7:00 PM. Memorial donations in Lauras name may be made to the Ida Rupp Public Library, 310 Madison Street, Port Clinton, OH 43452.
